| Although it looks pretty old, it’s actually only 153 years old, as it was constructed around 1873 and paid for by the banker, Thomas Baring to replace a smaller church a bit further away. Designed by the London Architect, A W Blomfield, in the Early English Gothic style and cost £5,500 to build on land released from the forest by the landowner, Charles Sotheby. And then, a surprise: I was invited into the tower’s bell-ringing room to see the carillon controller. The church has a slightly unusual bell set-up in that it doesn’t have the classic bells and ropes, but a keyboard-type device that rings the bells with a clapper. Visually, it reminded me of a railway signalling cabin controller, except instead of the tinkle of bells to instruct staff which levers to pull to control the trains, we’re tapping away to ring the bells.A mug of coffee and a slice of cake for £3.50 cash, then sit in the churchyard just doing nothing at all and just relaxing. There were bikers in leathers, old ladies in sandals wobbling with their trays, couples with dogs, relaxing on the ground, sitting in plastic chairs, or in my case, finding an old tree stump. -- ???????? | |||
