AT&T Preps for 5G, Doubles LTE Speed in More Than 100 New Markets

As part of 5G Evolution strategy, AT&T continues to evolve it's LTE network and has announced  117 new markets which will have theoretical peak speeds of up to 400 megabits per second for capable devices using  LTE Advanced features like 256 QAM, 4x4 MIMO, and 3-way carrier aggregation. 

This brings the total number of markets served with LTE-Advanced technology to 141 including  Atlanta, Chicago, Memphis, Nashville, San Diego and others. The operator plans to launch these LTE Advanced capabilities in over 500 markets later this year.

The operator has also rolled out LTE-LAA in parts of 3 new markets Boston, Sacramento and McAllen, Texas areas, bringing the total number of markets served with that technology to 7. AT&T’s LTE-LAA technologies can deliver theoretical peak speeds for capable devices of up to 1 gigabit per second.

AT&T previously launched LTE-LAA in The Loop in Chicago, around Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, downtown Los Angeles and the Financial District in San Francisco. The company plans to enable LTE-LAA in at least 24 markets this year.

Earlier this year, the operator announced plans to deploy mobile 5G to customers in a dozen cities, including in parts of Dallas, Atlanta, and Waco, Texas.
