Normally limited to winter months when things are a bit quieter — the behind the scenes tours have resumed at Tower Bridge.

The tours include all the public areas, the walkways and the boiler rooms, but then take you into the operational areas including the Control Cabin and Machinery Room.

Then, deep down into the bowels of the bridge, to the immense Bascule Chambers, which house the huge counterweights that swing down into this cathedral space when the bridge opens.

As the bridge opens a lot in the summer months, the Bascule Chambers are off-limits, which is why the tours are only possible during the quieter winter months.

Do note that a modest head for heights is needed as while you’re underground, there’s an open metal staircase to navigate to get down to the bottom of the chamber.

The tours cost £50 per person, last around two hours and take place on Saturdays and Sundays during November – max 6 people per tour.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you
