| Elsa Schiaparelli was a French fashion designer who set up shop in 1927 and went on to be the favoured supplier to many of Europe’s leading ladies, artists, actresses, aristocrats and politicians’ wives – as there weren’t that many female politicians to supply. And while far less famous than her rival, Coco Chanel, she was regarded as one of the leading fashion designers between the two world wars. The overwhelming impression is of a designer who favoured very sharp cuts in the dresses, suits and jackets, while also being quite experimental in how she used modern materials to sculpt the clothes. I suspect these are clothes for the owner to be looked at and stand out in the crowd, rather than for comfort and pleasure. One famous surrealist photo taken in Trafalgar Square, which you will probably recognise when you see it, turns out to be inspired by a Dali painting owned by Schiaparelli. That photo was taken after she set up shop in London, staying in the city for some years, and apparently spending a lot of time in the city’s East End pubs while working variously as a theatre designer and, at one point, a nanny. -- ???????? | |||
